Interview with Mark Chandler
Hey Mark"Zumlahr"Chandler, thank you so much for doing this interview with Canadian Brutality.
The first question I would like to ask you is what is the name of the band you are currently in? Also, have you been in different bands previously other than this one?
I'm currently in Ataxia from London Ontario but I am also prepping to go on tour in July with Embodied Torment from California
Other bands I've been in are
Mulletcorpse
Orchidectomy
Eschatus
Nakatheral
What is the major part in the band that you play? What do you mostly do or contribute to your band?
I'm the bass player in the band. So my major contribution is making sure the slams are low and brutal and the tech parts are tight as hell.
We all share writing duties as well so that's a part of the band too.
Can you give us a little bio about yourself?
I've been playing Bass for about 16 years. Started playing in a black metal band outta Stratford (nakatheral) then moved to London and joined Eschatus. I've always been more into the death metal style of music and also playing.
I play a 6 string Alex Webster Spector Bass. ....that's all the cool stuff about me.
How many albums, ep's, and/or demos have you released?
Nakatheral had a demo.
Eschatus had a demo
orchidectomy had a demo and an album....and another unreleased demo
Ataxia has a demo and a full length and we're currently working on another ep.
Do you think the BDM in canada has changed over the years?
Absolutely
I think back in the Orchidectomy days it was few and far between the brutal bands....there seems to be a bigger market now for it which is fucking awesome!
Is there a particular band that you think defines CBDM?
Well for me it would have to be Cumgun from quebec. Those dudes were so sick and just all around good dudes. I feel like being in orchidectomy was a big plus for me too....definitely wouldn't have the experiences without them.
Do you have any major Canadian musician influences?
I've always been big into Cryptopsy. Having played with them multiple times has never ever ceased to amaze me.
Can you tell me the name of one CBDM band you have seen live who blew you away?
Cumgun for sure. The raw power and energy and sound from those guys. Holy shit!!!
What would you say is the essential Canadian Brutal Death Metal album?
None so Vile - Cryptopsy
Suck the guts from my slut - Cumgun
Are the any newer Canadian Brutal Death Metal bands you like or enjoy listening to?
I liked what Cuff was upto. Good bros and killer tracks. Bummed they recently called it but I know those boys will bring something else totally sick to the table......
Can you tell me one of the funniest memories you have with the band?
I have so goddamn many....here's some quick descriptions....people can ask for more details if they need too....
Driving through a truck stop on the 401 because I thought it was the exit.
French people quoting Cartman from South Park
Lactose intolerant singers eating cheese efore 16 hour car rides.....
Yelling "petit dejuner" to people in Montreal. ...
the list goes on. .....
Would you like to share any advice for upcoming acts or anyone who would just like to start playing music in general?
Don't ever stop....enjoy every moment and take every criticism and praise for what it's worth. Whether drunk or sober always take people for face value.
And practice.....Oh God practice.....the more you practice the better you get and the better you get the more you want to practice.
What is the best poutine you have ever eaten and where did you get it?
This is by far the best question I've ever been asked in my life.
I'd have to say the first time I had smokes poutine was for sure the best. It's was a bacon double cheeseburger. ...large.. I've made a lot of mistakes in my life but that was definitely NOT one of them.
Thanks for taking the time and answering these questions for us
